Roadtrip Uganda - Part 1
Uganda the Pearl of Africa Travel report road trip Uganda
Entebbe At the end of August 2019, we are leaving for an approximately five-week road trip to Uganda. We love exploring and adventuring and seize every opportunity to pack our suitcases and cameras and have a wonderful trip. The anticipation starts at home when we learn about the country and roughly plan our trip. We usually book our first night (this is so relaxed) and then let the rest of our trip happen as it comes and enjoy the unexpected, which we love so much.
After a prosperous flight, we arrive at Entebbe airport at noon in the evening. When we get outside the terminal, we are met by a driver who takes us to our accommodation La Nest in fifteen minutes. Marjam is already waiting for us and gives us a warm welcome. We get a lovely room and nestle under the canopy and enjoy our lovely cold beer. Around half past one, we roll into our bed on our way to the big adventure.
The first day we take it easy. We explore Entebbe on foot and visit the Botanical Garden. Entebbe is a surprise to us. No high-rise buildings, no busy city but a quiet place with a great rural character. Lovely to acclimatise. The walk around the Botanical Garden is also very relaxing and we see very many different birds including Kingfishers, Maribou, Bee-eaters, Ibis, Black and White Stork, various monkeys including the Colobus Monkey and the Wavid and lots of flowers. We also enjoy the sweeping views of Lake Victoria. We return excited and can't wait to see what else Uganda has to offer us.
Mabamba Swamps At six o'clock the alarm clock rings. Our breakfast is already prepared by Marjam in the form of a packed lunch because we leave early for the Mabamba Swamps in the hope of seeing lots of wildlife but especially the Shoebill Storks. After about an hour of sailing in a small motorboat, we arrive at the swamp. How lucky we are, a Shoebill right in front of our noses! You really feel like you're back in prehistory. What an imposing beast about 1.50 metres tall, its wide mouth and piercing eyes. Our trip to Uganda soon comes to a climax. Truly amazing!!!
The Swamps have much more to offer. Countless kingfishers (the malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, bee-eaters and plenty of other birds.
On the way back, we get dropped off at the zoo. A nice and orderly park and a wonderful foretaste of what we hope to see next.
Back at the hotel, we grab a nice cold beer and strike up a conversation with Marjam. Marjam chats our ear off. About politics, the Ugandan people and their day-to-day mentality and how this affects trade and the general development of the country, religion also comes up.
